Helen Mary Jones is the Deputy Leader of Plaid Cymru and spokeswoman for Health and Social Services. She is also Chair of the Children & Young People's Committee in the National Assembly, and sits on Legislation Committee No. 3 and the Health Committee. In the Assembly Election of 1999 she won the Labour seat of Llanelli, only to lose by 21 votes in 2003. She was re-elected to the Assembly however, via the regional list, for Mid and West Wales. In 2007 Helen Mary Jones again contested the Llanelli seat, but without the security of heading Plaid’s regional list. She was elected, with a majority of nearly 4,000. Her political interests include social justice, equal opportunities, children's rights and employment.
