Sweepstake statement
World Cup Open Blog — By Marcus Warner on June 13, 2010 2:00 pmSWEEPSTAKES – office ones, friends ones, online ones and even political party ones…
The sweepstake is a staple part of any World Cup, a place where lifetime supporting of distant teams can be made. I can remember my first ever one, a 50p a pop one in primary school for the 1994 World Cup. I got Columbia. I read about them in Shoot Magazine, and they were sure Columbia were genuine dark horses/one to watch. With players like Valderama and Freddy Rincon and the fact they beat Argentina 5-0, in Argentina in qualification, I convinced my ten year old head they were going to win. Unfortunately, the only memorable thing about their campaign was the shooting of Andres Escobar.
I still have a soft spot for teams like Columbia and Nigeria because of sweepstakes, as I am sure many of you do. My mate still buys Greece shirts after winning £250 on his Euro 2004 sweepstake.
Anyway, this year I have entered into a sweepstake with a group of friends. I have got Slovakia…ouch…but also I got Brazil! I think I have already planned to spend my winnings, although ribbing my best mate for drawing Paraguay and Honduras (Wilson Palacious is Tottenham’s 3rd best holding midfielder etc) I probably value more.
Another friend probably had the two strongest together, France and England, but I think I would pay him my own winnings as long as England didn’t win the World Cup (although I want them to do well).
Sweepstakes make you support teams you would even think of, So what teams did you get in your sweepstake?

I got North Korea and, in another office sweepstakes, North Korea.
I’m never doing this again.
Ouch Dunc! The only positive thing is literally no one knows anything about their players or team.
Why is there a picture of the rugby world cup to go with this post? Pay attention guys.
Mike, because I added the photo and cannot distinguish. Though come to think of it, the photo might count as a “Spot the balls up” type feature…
Good move Daran – any move to confuse or subvert World Cup Fever (or pneumonia, dysentry or whatever else it is) is welcome. Indeed it was RWC 95 that ruined my enthusiasm in sweepstakes. Working as one of only two real rugby fans in an office of Sowetans I crowed when I got the All Blacks, commiserated with whoever got Wales, and laughed all the way to the final when they were (allegedly) poisoned the night before….
