The Smart money
Bubble — By Daran Hill on May 11, 2010 10:15 amAS both Betsan and I alluded to yesterday, the departure of Alun Cairns to Westminster creates something of a headache for the Welsh Conservatives. This is because he has now to be replaced in the Assembly and the next name on the list is that of Chris Smart, the controversial Porthcawl who – not to put too fine a point on it – has been out of favour with the Welsh Conservative leadership for some years. (If I did put too fine a point on it, I might suggest that when Rod Richards was removed as Welsh party leader was the point in question…)
Anyway, Smart was selected second on the Conservative list for South Wales West and now that Cairnsy has gone he should, as with royal lineage, ascend to the throne. But not quite it seems. It will be up to the Welsh Conservative Board of Management to make a decision on the matter on Friday. Speculation around the nature of their decision has already begun. One observer of proceedings has gone on the record to say that:
“I don’t really see how Alun Cairns can carry on as an AM. He is going to the House of Commons to represent a seat that isn’t even in the region he represents at the Assembly.
“Ten years ago the board of management of the Welsh Conservatives decided that regional list AMs should resign if they get elected to Parliament, and I hope they keep to that decision now.”
Rather a critical tone in the first paragraph, don’t you think? The observer in question is hardly impartial either. It’s the man himself, Chris Smart.
The Western Mail covers the situation in more detail here.
Expect more on this tale as it unfolds.
