The East German governent's decision to allow travel to West Berlin saw thousands scale the wall
YOU might have noticed the change to the site’s masthead today. You almost certainly won’t have missed the extensive coverage in today’s media. Exactly 20 years ago the Berlin Wall, which for 28 years had stood, in the words of JFK, as “the most vivid demonstration of the failures of the communist system” began to fall.
The effects on the global balance of power are discussed in greater detail and with greater expertise elsewhere. But we’ve organised a week of articles that examine the fall of the Wall from a Welsh perspective.
In our politics, our culture, our society and our business the fall of the Berlin Wall was a major event – bigger perhaps than most of us have lived through. You might not agree with some of the arguments you see here this week, but we hope you enjoy reading them.
As always, please do chip in with your observations, or just tell us what you think.

I wasn’t there when the wall opened – but I was there on New Year’s Eve 1989 and New Year’s Day 1990. Best New Year’s Eve party I ever attended – even better than seeing the Manics’ in the Millennium – both sides of the wall.
Pictures are being posted up at http://www.leightonandrews.com and on my Facebook and Flickr accounts.
