Punters predict a Carwyn landslide
Labour leadership race — By Adam Higgitt on November 27, 2009 2:27 pm
The money's on Carwyn
THE POLLS are closed, and the pundits have made their predictions. But so too have the punters. According to our friends at Ladbrokes the electoral college of the Welsh Labour Party will anoint Carwyn Jones the next Leader of the National Assembly Labour Party next Tuesday.
If the money is to be believed, he’ll storm it, too. Over 90% of all the total market is on the Bridgend AM, with a number of big bets at short odds placed in the last couple of weeks. And even though the number of bets is more evenly spread, Carwyn is still way out in front.
Matthew Shaddick of Ladbrokes told us “we’ve seen significant interest in this race. I’m amazed at how short the price on Carwyn Jones has got – we took another big bet at 1/6 this morning which suggests some people are very confident of the outcome.”
We’ll know that at around 17:30 hrs on Tuesday. Whether the punters are right or wrong, they are unlikely to be swayed by anything other than the chances of victory. On that count, the Counsel General might be advised to enjoy his weekend – it could be his last for some time free of the burdens of leadership.
