Renewing the situation

Huw Lewis AM offers more detail on his view of renewables
THE PROBLEM with trying to analyse candidate policy statements in an even way is that although you think you’ve captured everything that’s public, candidates have a habit of adding more flesh to the bones during their campaign. So just when we thought we had the definite analysis of Labour leadership contenders on environment and climate change on Saturday, by Monday one of them makes it their theme of the day and puts out a significant statement. Hey ho – we’ll get used to it. And we’re not really complaining after making energy policy the theme for today’s Daily Column on WalesHome.org.
This afternoon Huw Lewis AM is visiting an innovative model of renewable energy provision in Pembrokeshire. Tidal Energy Ltd has developed a “DeltaStream” device that uses similar technology to wind turbine propellers, which can generate energy from the sea floor. The company expects to run a pilot project in Ramsey Sound in 2010.
Talking about his approach to renewable energy, Huw said: “As far as I’m concerned, all forms of renewable energy are on the table; that includes a conditional ‘yes’ for both the Severn Barrage and Wylfa B. To make meaningful progress on tackling climate change we cannot afford to wait until every system of renewable energy provision is perfect, we have to make choices on the technology we have available today, whilst continuing with research and development. In terms of the long-term future however, I am really excited by the technology being developed here in Wales in harnessing tidal energy.”
He also addressed the issue of the green economy, saying: “There are obvious long-term benefits to the Welsh economy of being out in front and testing new forms of renewable energy technology, but where we hear a lot from politicians about ‘green jobs’, we hear less about ‘green workers’ or ‘green skills’. There is a lot of work – and refocusing – to do if Wales is to steal a march in the green economy. It is by involving business, trade unions and universities with government in deciding long-term economic policies that we can properly identify and address any skills shortages we have.”
So the existing Welsh Assembly Government green jobs strategy evidently doesn’t float his boat…
